Natural therapy regulations 'could kill small companies'

Natural herbal skincare producer Lynn Kirkland fears that if the Therapeutic Products and Medicines Bill becomes law, parts of her business will be put at risk. The owner of The Herb Farm at Ashhurst says with next Wednesday's deadline for submissions looming, time is running out for people to respond to the bill, which had its first reading just before Christmas. Mrs Kirkland says the bill, which maintains its purpose is to provide additional sanctions to ensure the safety of natural therapeutic goods, will drive small companies out of business. Late last year The Herb Farm attracted a Foundation for Research, Science and Technology grant to develop technology to boost production capability. "On one hand, the Government is encouraging us, and that's where we need to focus our energies, but with this bill, we might not be able to afford to keep making our products." She says regulation of low risk, traditional remedies, dietary supplements and herbal therapeutic creams such as arnica as if they are drugs is unnecessary. Small companies were unlikely to be able to afford the cost of compliance, innovation would be quashed, and consumers would have fewer choices either because small businesses stopped production or because prices had to rise. The select committee considering submissions on the bill is expected to report back to the House by the end of April. Mrs Kirkland is meeting Palmerston North MP Steve Maharey to discuss the bill this weekend, and says people who have an opinion should make sure they get their submissions to parliament's government and administration select committee clerk before they are caught out by the Waitangi Day holiday.
